How long until a piece or live rock has been cured?
I have to re-cure a piece of live rock. How long until it is fully cured so I can add it back to my salt water fish tank?
Friday was when I made a bad choice with the rock and had to start over. The rock smells horrible, dear god its bad. I basically killed the whole rock. I have been scrubbing it everyday to remove everything
Like BG said, the time it takes can vary widely.
What you should do is get a powerhead and a bucket. I just use the bucket that I buy my salt in, it works beautifully. Hook up the powerhead to the bucket to keep water moving, and give it some oxygen. Every few days, smell the inside of the bucket. When it no longer smells like dead skunk, you know it’s done. Do complete water changes about every 3 or 4 days.
If you’re scrubbing it every day, you just have rock. It’s no longer live rock. Curing it is to remove anything that’s dead already, which would decay in your tank, and it would be much like leaving a dead fish in your tank. If you have other live rock in your tank though, that one will repopulate the new one with microorganisms and everything that you want on the new one.
